Asian Kitchen in Paris

I’ve done a good job at avoiding the kitchen for two weeks, but I think it’s time I start working those hot plates!  I’ve started to become a little homesick for Korean food, most likely sparked by a confrontation with a harsh old man who told my friend and I never to come back to his store.  There was nothing wrong that we did, unless browsing through books in a bookstore is a crime here!  I guess I need to learn more about the French service industry, obviously, the customer is not always right!  It was about time I start craving for some rice anyway.  After all, I am Asian.

To stock up my pantry, I went to Ace Mart, a Korean market in the 2nd arrondissement.  It was bigger than I thought it would be and the selection wasn’t all that bad.  Here are the essentials that I bought: (yes, kimchi was included).

For lunch the next day, I made zucchini pancakes and brown rice with black beans (yes, I bought my own rice cooker). I’m actually growing a little fonder of the hot plates.  They were easy, straight forward, and required absolutely no language skills. Not too bad. The meal didn’t turned out to be super Korean and I actually didn’t need all those Asian ingredients to make those two dishes, but having soy sauce and sesame oil by my side makes Paris feel a little more like home.

A ricecooker is very essential. My first time cooking rice on a stovetop freshman year resulted in a burnt, glutinous disaster!
