Matcha Coconut Tea Cookies

December 7, 2015

Matcha Coconut Tea Cookies | Jessica's Dinner Party

When I began this site over six years ago (already, gasp!), online and social media were not exactly what they are today. Instagram didn’t exist yet and the number of popular food blogs could be counted on fingers. My own online presence has evolved over the years, from actively creating content here to being more present on social media. I’m still learning about who and what I want to be online, but I’m beginning a slow crawl back here to my home base.

Cocotella: Homemade Coconut Nutella

May 29, 2014

homemade coconut nutella | jessica's dinner party

I love getting gifts for people, but am not very good at it.  Someone told me a long time ago that the key to finding a great gift was to get something that you would want for yourself.  Not the best advise for me as I literally like anything that comes tied with ribbon.  I love those teeny tiny notebooks that no one ever knows what to write in, lip gloss in every shape and color (no matter if it doesn’t match my skin tone), trinkets and souvenirs that have no use or function, even books I know I’ll never read! I just love stuff, a trait I get from my grandpa who rarely ever leaves a store empty handed. There have been, of course, gifts that stand out in my memory, ones that were useful, personal, and more meaningful.  Ample thought was put into those gifts concerning who I am and what I would really like. Those are the gifts I want to give but fail miserably at when I go to a store. The solution that I’ve come up with is to make something in the kitchen. Within that space, I’m more focused and better at concocting gifts that are not only thoughtful and individualized, but a little more personalized.  Plus, who doesn’t love a homemade treat!

Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf for a Birthday

March 23, 2014

Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf | Jessica's Dinner Party

It was my sister’s 30th birthday a few weeks ago and per tradition I baked something for her. Ideally, I would’ve liked to make a rich, creamy cheesecake or something more unconventional with hints of lemongrass and tropical fruit, but delicacies of that sort don’t fair too well during transpacific journeys. You see, my sister lives in New York and me Seoul. It’s been years since we’ve lived in the same city, but we’ve managed to stay close and be involved in each other’s lives (including this site!).  We’re actually closer today than when we were living under the same roof, haha. It’s a bit disappointing to be so far on away, especially on such a milestone of a birthday like 30, but I know my brother-in-law did something very special for her (the after maths of it which I am subject to ie. lots of YouTube videos of Phantom of the Opera…good thing I like musicals too!).

Chia Seed Waffles

February 7, 2014

Chia Seed Waffles by Jessica's Dinner Party

At the beginning of this year I made the easiest stove top granola, full of whole grain goodness and a trail of healthy ingredients.  I love trying out new ingredients, but admit I’m not good about sharing multiple uses for them.  Partly inspired by my sister, who has mentioned a number of times her own concerns about being resourceful, I’m making it a point this year to follow up on ingredients with more new recipes.  To make it super easy, I’m adding a little section at the end of each entry where I’l link to other posts with related materials. This is just the start, so the list of linked recipes will be short, but I’m excited to see how big and intricate this web can grow!

Breakfast to Start

January 5, 2014

Simple Stove Top Granola by Jessica's Dinner Party

It’s a new year, which kind of means a new start, so what better way to kick off than with a really great breakfast? One of my (many, well not THAT many) resolutions this year is to be more adventurous and creative on this site. I’m not necessarily thinking about super hard, crazy difficult recipes with high powered techniques involved…but just a little bit more amusing and possibly even inspiring to others.  Well…the second part is probably reaching too high ha!, but if I can inspire even just my sister to cook more often and try out my recipes I’ll consider my 2014 resolution a success!

Heyyyy I wrote a post! (Yes...it's been a while.) Heyyyy I wrote a post! (Yes...it's been a while.) It's about the smash cake I made for my baby's 1st birthday--an easy recipe made with wholesome ingredients and sweetened with fruits only.

Even though the cake has no butter, oil, and refined sugar, it still has great bounce and fluff 💫. I frosted it with whipped, unsweetened Greek yogurt and heavy cream, and my baby loved digging into it on her birthday (see last photo).

The cake also makes a nice snack or breakfast. For that, I skip the frosting and serve plain or I'll make little cake balls with Greek yogurt and hemp seeds which makes it even more filling and nutritious 😋.

This recipe is super quick and simple, and there are a lot of different variations that can be made--all of which are written out in my post. Check out the recipe from the link in my profile!

First bake post baby! I had to restart midway beca First bake post baby! I had to restart midway because I forgot the sugar 🤦🏻‍♀️. I almost quit because time was running out until the next 🤱🏻 and I still needed to finish up some other chores and food prep for the week. But I’m so happy I made it happen—even though the result wasn’t perfect. I’ve been wanting/needing to scratch that baking itch for awhile now 🙃. Any guesses on what I made? 🌽
Happy Lunar New Year 🐂!! I spent the last two m Happy Lunar New Year 🐂!! I spent the last two months being spoiled and taken care of by my mom. During that time I learned so much from her on how to be a mom and cook her food—the best in my opinion 😆.

This is my attempt at the 떡만두국, tteok mandu guk, rice cake and 🥟 soup, that she taught me. It’s not quite the same, but hoping that one day my cooking will be as comforting and special to my daughter the way my mom’s is to me 💗.

At the beginning of this year, I wrote that 2020 f At the beginning of this year, I wrote that 2020 felt like it was going to be special--it definitely ended up being special for a wide spectrum of reasons.

It's been a tough year to say the least, but I hope everyone is able to find a silver lining in all of this. For me, it was having the space to enjoy my pregnancy quietly and with those closest around me, and giving birth to a healthy baby during a pandemic.

I don't know what's in store for 2021, but I think I'd be ok if it was a little less explosive than this year 🤣.
