A Summer Soiree

July 2, 2014

a summer soiree | jessica's dinner party

Another summer season has kicked off with my mom’s annual backyard barbecue.  Every year the guest list seems to get a little bigger and along with that an even better menu.  My mom outdid herself again with plenty of classic as well as inventive appetizers: cocktail shrimp, perilla salad, fried chicken..my only regret is that I didn’t take enough pictures of all her beautiful dishes! Oh, and did I mention that there was 13+ kilos worth of T-bone steaks??!  Amahz!  To end, I put together a little ice cream bar with fruit and a few cakes to match!  It was such a lovely evening and because almost all my desserts could be made in advance I was able to enjoy the night without any fuss! I’ll share a few ice cream recipes in coming weeks, but for now here a few photos from the night!

How to Make a Dessert Bar: Planning, Storing, and Packing

December 14, 2012

dessert bar, dessert table, wedding, jessica's dinner party

Creating delicious food is important, but the logistics of executing a dessert bar is a big priority as well. Everything needs to be made in advance, so careful thought must go into the timeline of when each dessert is made and how it will be stored.  The key to good organization is to know each dish inside and out. Making each dessert from start to finish in one go is not always the most time efficient, so it helps to look at all the different components as individual parts and plan things this way. Although I’ve had no professional experience in catering, I did take a lot from the different stages I’ve done.  It was all those little tips and tricks I learned along the way that helped keep the edges clean and straight.

How to Make a Dessert Bar: Two Months Later

December 9, 2012

dessert bar, dessert table, wedding

The wedding feels like it was all just a dream.  Months later, I’m still in disbelief that it actually happened. Everything came together beautifully and although the dessert bar was such a huge part of the wedding for me, I merely remember it as just the cherry finish on top.

There are really no excuses as to why it has taken me so long to continue my posts.  I can only say that despite my efforts to slow down time it continued to tick forward.  Sorry to those (aka grandpa) who have (has) patiently waited for me to update.  Hopefully this is better late than never.

How to Make a Dessert Bar: The Favor

September 28, 2012

wedding, dessert bar, berry, lemongrass, jam, favor

After doing a bunch of test batches I decided to go with the berry-lemon jam with lemongrass!  My sister really loves that flavor to begin with and one of the best dining experience I’ve had with her and her fiance was at Kiin Kiin in Copenhagen, a Michelin starred Thai restaurant that uses a lot of lemongrass. The deep red color fits right into the wedding venue (a winery!), the flavor is familiar but with a twist, and it actually required the least about of prep work!

How to Make a Dessert Bar: Jammin’

September 21, 2012

Before I was asked to do the dessert table for my sister’s wedding, her fiance suggested that I make the favors.  Somehow just the favors turned into something even bigger, but I’m happy to do it all! The favors won’t exactly be part of the dessert bar, but I thought it would be nice to include it in this series. We bounced around a couple of thoughts, but once the idea of jam came up the decision was set. Lucky for me, jam can be made well in advance, so right before the wedding all I need to worry about are the desserts.

Heyyyy I wrote a post! (Yes...it's been a while.) Heyyyy I wrote a post! (Yes...it's been a while.) It's about the smash cake I made for my baby's 1st birthday--an easy recipe made with wholesome ingredients and sweetened with fruits only.

Even though the cake has no butter, oil, and refined sugar, it still has great bounce and fluff 💫. I frosted it with whipped, unsweetened Greek yogurt and heavy cream, and my baby loved digging into it on her birthday (see last photo).

The cake also makes a nice snack or breakfast. For that, I skip the frosting and serve plain or I'll make little cake balls with Greek yogurt and hemp seeds which makes it even more filling and nutritious 😋.

This recipe is super quick and simple, and there are a lot of different variations that can be made--all of which are written out in my post. Check out the recipe from the link in my profile!

First bake post baby! I had to restart midway beca First bake post baby! I had to restart midway because I forgot the sugar 🤦🏻‍♀️. I almost quit because time was running out until the next 🤱🏻 and I still needed to finish up some other chores and food prep for the week. But I’m so happy I made it happen—even though the result wasn’t perfect. I’ve been wanting/needing to scratch that baking itch for awhile now 🙃. Any guesses on what I made? 🌽
Happy Lunar New Year 🐂!! I spent the last two m Happy Lunar New Year 🐂!! I spent the last two months being spoiled and taken care of by my mom. During that time I learned so much from her on how to be a mom and cook her food—the best in my opinion 😆.

This is my attempt at the 떡만두국, tteok mandu guk, rice cake and 🥟 soup, that she taught me. It’s not quite the same, but hoping that one day my cooking will be as comforting and special to my daughter the way my mom’s is to me 💗.

At the beginning of this year, I wrote that 2020 f At the beginning of this year, I wrote that 2020 felt like it was going to be special--it definitely ended up being special for a wide spectrum of reasons.

It's been a tough year to say the least, but I hope everyone is able to find a silver lining in all of this. For me, it was having the space to enjoy my pregnancy quietly and with those closest around me, and giving birth to a healthy baby during a pandemic.

I don't know what's in store for 2021, but I think I'd be ok if it was a little less explosive than this year 🤣.
